What Does the Bible Say About Healthy Living?
God cares about every part of our lives—including how we nourish and care for our bodies. The Bible teaches that our bodies are a gift from Him, and we are called to steward them well.
1. Our Bodies Are God’s Temple
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us:
"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies."
This means that taking care of our health—through what we eat, drink, and how we live—is an act of worship.
2. God Provides Good Food for Nourishment
God designed food to sustain, nourish, and strengthen us.
In Genesis 1:29, He says:
"I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food."
He created natural, whole foods to fuel our bodies, showing that eating wisely is part of His plan for His people.
3. Avoid Overindulgence and Gluttony
While food is a blessing, the Bible warns against overindulgence.
Proverbs 23:20-21 says:
"Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags."
Self-control in eating and drinking honors God and helps us live with discipline.
4. Moderation and a Sound Mind
The Bible does not forbid drinking alcohol but warns against drunkenness.
Ephesians 5:18 says:
"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."
Moderation and judgement should guide our choices.
5. All Our Actions Should Glorify God - Even Eating and Drinking
In 1 Corinthians 10:31, Paul says:
"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."
Every choice we make - even in food and drink - should reflect gratitude, stewardship, and self-control.
How Can We Apply This?
- Eat nutritious, God-given foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins).
- Practice self-control and avoid overindulgence.
- Stay hydrated and avoid harmful substances.
- Honor God by taking care of your health through wise eating and drinking habits.
Taking care of our bodies isn’t just about physical health—it’s a spiritual act of honoring the One who created us!
