When the Storm Rages
Life can feel like a storm…
Waves crashing. Winds howling. With no solid ground in sight.
In December 2021, I got the worst phone call I’ve ever received. In the early hours of the morning, my oldest sister had a massive stroke and was being rushed to the ICU in an ambulance.
She was barely 33 years old. She had just given birth to one of my sweet nieces 3 weeks prior.
I was just at her house, watching her 3 older daughters while she was in the hospital having her youngest.
She was healthy. She ate well. She barely drank caffeine. She wasn’t going anywhere in the pandemic, locked down for the safety of her young children. She cooked from scratch and avoided dyes and chemicals.
How could this happen?
This call came just 10 days after the call that my husband’s stepmom had suddenly passed away.
This call came amidst a global crisis, and when I wasn’t even 7 months postpartum with my oldest.
We weren’t allowed to visit. They didn’t know if she’d make it at first. Then they didn’t know if she’d ever be the same.
How could this happen?
It was like time stopped. It was like the air was sucked from my lungs.
In these moments, it’s easy to be consumed by worry, fear, or panic.
It’s even easier to lose faith, doubting that God is there or can fix it.
But as believers, we are never left to face the storm alone.
Psalm 61:2 says, “From the end of the earth I call to You. When my heart is weary; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
God is the solid rock, the foundation upon which we build our hope, life, and faith.
Strong, steadfast, and unshakable.
When life gets hard, when we feel overwhelmed, He invites us to step away from the chaos and into His arms (Psalm 46:10). Instead of carrying burdens alone, we lay them at His feet, trusting that He is in control.
If you’re feeling weary today, take a moment to pause. Pray. Open His Word.
Instead of a raging sea, let His peace wash over you in waves.
No storm is greater, no force is stronger, and no pain is more powerful than the God who holds you.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
In the end, my sister made a miraculous, full recovery.
The scariest season of my life became a testament of God’s provision and every-present protection in the face of fear and tragedy.
Life is full of uncertainty. The storms will continue to rage.
But our God is good. We can always cling to the Rock as we weather any storm.
